Italian govt. blames aliens for fires!

Picture this scene. You and your neighbours have lived happily in your village for a long time. Suddenly, everyday household appliances all over the village start spontaneously combusting. Who do you call? Your electricity supplier, and a few other relevant experts, right? You expect answers, but no-one has any for you, especially when unplugged appliances start spontaneously igniting. At this point, a lot of people would suspect supernatural forces were at work.

This very scenario played out for real three years ago, in the Sicilian village of Canneto di Caronia, sixty miles east of Palermo, Italy. Residents, scientists, military boffins and electrical engineers were astounded when cell phones, refrigerators, cookers, televisions and even furniture, ignited before their very eyes.

Local residents blamed evil supernatural forces for the inexplicable fires. The Vatican's chief exorcist, Father Gabriele Amorth, was consulted and he was quick to assign blame. "I’ve seen things like this before", he said. "Demons occupy a house and appear in electrical goods. Let’s not forget that Satan and his followers have immense powers."

It seems, however, that the Italian government disagrees. Italy's Civil Protection Department began an investigation into the fires, costing to date an estimated £1 million - about US $2 million. Several Italian newspapers have obtained leaked copies of an interim report resulting from the inquiry. It seems the Italian government may be on the verge of officially blaming aliens.

The report mentions how a UFO is believed to have landed near the village just before the fires started. The report explains that "burnt imprints which have not been explained were found in a field." When pressed to explain the findings, Sicily’s Civil Protection chief, Francesco Mantegna Venerando, the report's coordinator, said: "This is not the final report. We are still working on our conclusions and this has been leaked. We are not saying that little green men from Mars started the fires but that unnatural forces capable of creating a large amount of electromagnetic energy were responsible. This is just one possibility. We are also looking at another one which involves the testing of top secret weapons by an unknown power which are also capable of producing an enormous amount of energy."

Predictably, the mainstream media has latched on to this story as a source of amusement. Sadly, their blinkered approach is missing its significance. Italy is a modern, sophisticated Western civilization, which is seriously examining whether or not non-human entities caused a series of frightening and dangerous events. Doesn't this tell us something? It suggests that the Italian government might have knowledge of the existence of such beings. Yet all the mainstream media can do is mock. It may well be that there is a very terrestrial cause for the fires. But this case is interesting simply because the Italian government is even entertaining the idea that extra-terrestrials may be to blame.
